How Much Room for a Tennis Court?
If you want to add a tennis court to your property, the first step would be to make sure you have enough room for the tennis court construction. However, we have built tennis courts in locations where the available space was slightly smaller than the normal regulation-size tennis court takes. A regulation doubles-size tennis court takes a minimum of 60′ by 120′. In addition, you need to consider the offset requirements, which is the distance from your neighbor’s property line as tennis courts are governed by zoning laws and regulations adopted by homeowners associations.

Various Court Construction Phases
Tennis court construction projects are executed in planned phases so they can run smoothly and be completed on time. There are several phases throughout the development of a tennis court construction project:
The initial phase starts with determining the conditions for construction. These include discussing and agreeing on several items such as the contract details, scope of work, zoning and HOA rules, plans and permits, site preparation, site orientation, type of playing surface you want, choosing a surfacing system, and picking out a color scheme, among other items.
Zoning is an important factor that will affect the tennis court construction project. Depending on your location, you could face restrictions with fencing and lighting. Some communities may specify the maximum fence height allowed, or may loosen their restrictions if you can build your new tennis court away from the road and obscure it with landscaping. The type of bright tennis court lighting necessary for night time games is by some considered intrusive and disruptive, so zoning or HOA restrictions could limit your use of the tennis court to daytime use only.
Among the different items to determine for any tennis court construction project are the plans and permits, and possibly soil surveys and engineering calculations. Some customers may have a completed plan, or may have started the permitting process themselves, or may want us to take the lead in performing all of these required steps. Today, we build tennis courts using some fairly large equipment that allows us to do a better, more accurate job. With concrete material, you have far more enduring performance than you do with asphalt in terms of resistance to settling, heaving and crack development. With concrete tennis courts, you get a more uniform playing surface, lower maintenance costs, longer service life, and so much more.
With concrete tennis court construction, you have a choice of post-tensioned concrete or reinforced concrete. And even more choices when it comes to surfacing options. The characteristics of court surfaces when combined with cushioning systems not only affect how fast the ball bounces, but it also contributes to your comfort and endurance while playing the game. Tennis court surfaces are classified as fast, medium, and slow. A Fast classification is generally a hard concrete surface with no cushioning system applied to it and provides for a fast speed of play.
One surface often over-looked with tennis court construction is synthetic turf, sometimes referred to as artificial grass. You might think it is a poor substitute for real grass. You’d be wrong. Synthetic turf can be used for a wide variety of outdoor game courts. It is cheaper to install and far easier to maintain than real grass. And especially important, it can be played on shortly after it rains whereas real grass would become saturated and would be impossible to play on after just a little bit of rain. Additionally you probably would not know the difference because synthetic turf plays very similarly to the real thing! So as you’re planning your tennis court construction project, consider synthetic turf for its surface. Because just like a real grass court, synthetic turf is a far more forgiving surface to play on than a hard surface. And more importantly, it is much easier on your legs and joints and causes less wear and tear to your body overall while you play!. This makes it ideal for everyday play and for many years of play without the accumulative risk of injuries from playing the game so much!
If your preference would be to reduce the impact on your joints without using an artificial turf surface, then you might opt for some of the acrylic color coatings and cushioned surface systems available on the market. Cushioned surface systems consist of one or more layers of cushioning materials, usually rubber or plastic fillers. These cushioned surface systems absorb impact which allow you to play longer and reduces muscle fatigue. Additionally they are also a very resilient surface material with good traction and ball bounce.
Both color coatings and cushioned surface systems come in a wide range of colors. No longer are you held to the traditional green tennis court, now you can choose nearly any color or combination of colors that different manufacturers offer. At Ferandell Tennis Courts, we paint our tennis court construction projects using paint from several top-brand manufacturers. This gives you a wide selection of colors to choose from. Keep in mind that some colors work better under certain conditions:
- Contrast: Dark court colors enhance visibility of yellow or light green tennis balls, aiding players in tracking the ball’s movement.
- Temperature: Dark colors tend to absorb sunlight, potentially leading to higher surface temperatures. Conversely, light colors absorb less sunlight, mitigating temperature buildup.
- Reflectivity: Light colors are more reflective, while darker colors are less so. Two-tone color schemes can define court boundaries effectively, with darker colors often used within boundaries for better visibility.
- Night Play: Surfaces with lower reflectivity, typically darker colors, may require additional lighting for nighttime play to ensure adequate illumination.
Once you have made your choices, all of the conditions for tennis court construction project has been determined and agreed, plans have been permitted, any other city ordinances performed or met, and access to the tennis court construction site is obtained, we begin the tennis court construction project!
